atrakcje ujscie wislyIt is an artificial estuary of the Wisla between Świbno and Mikoszewo, created in the years 1891–1895 by digging a new river bed on the section from Przegalina to the Bay of Gdańsk.

The decision to build excevation of Vistula river was made after a series of floods in the 19th century.

A particularly catastrophic flood in 1888 prompted the Prussianauthorities to decide to connect the Vistula directly with the Gulf of Gdańsk.

The excavation was to reduce the risk of embolic floods, enabling ice and floodwaters to flow freely into the Baltic Sea.

From among many excavation projects developed in the 19th century, a design was chosen by designers Alsen and Fahl in 1877.

The route of the new riverbed was marked out along Przemysława, a mediewal Wisla branch, which disappeared in later years.

On average, around 1000 workers and 40 steam machines worked on the construction of excavation. Seven milion cubic meters of land were moped during the work.

A modern water channel was created, 7.1 kilometers long, 250 to 400 meters wide, surrounded  by floodbanks 10 meters high.

Simultaneously with the construction of the excavation, the Vistula of Gdańsk (nowis called Martwa Wisła), Szkarpawa and Nogat were cut off with locks and floodgates.

The course of levees was also changed.

The opening ceremony was interestingly solved - on March 31, 1895, at 15.45, the president of West Prussia, Gustav von Gossler, at the telegraph signal of the emperor Wilhelm II, opened the road with the first streams of Vistula by hand.

The construction of the Vistula ditch shortened the course of the river by about 10 kilometers, increasing the decline of its final section.

The area of the Vistula river basin has decreased, from which the Motława basin and its tributaries were cut off. An important change was the formation of the heapcone, enlarged by river debriscarried and deposited by the Vistula waters.

Since digging a newestuary, the shoreline in its area has moped back about 3 kilometers towards the Baltic Sea.

atrakcje przeprawa promowa

When, at the end of the 19th century, the Vistula was dug, changing its location, there was a need for a ferry crossing over the Vistula to shorten the route on the Krynica Morska - Gdańsk route

(the shortest route to Krynica Morska runs from Świbno).

The ferry operates seasonally from the end of April to October, from 5.15a.m. to 10.00p.m..

From 6.00 am, the ferry operates every half hour, more often with heavy traffic.

The crossing is served by a modern ferry built in 2006 with a load capacity of 90 tons. It can carry passengers, cars and even buses.

The crossing to the otherside of the river takes about 5 minutes. Just traveling by ferry makes it possible to admire the Vistula Estuary and is a major tourist attraction!

It is located at Lazurowa Street on the Island and is an example of a modern watertower that combines technical, tourist, cognitive and educational functions.

In addition to the technical function, the water tank also has a viewing function.

At the top of the tower tank, there is a viewing terrace with a panoramic view. It is located AT an altitude of 45 m above sea level, i.e. over 10 meters above the highest trees. It is the highest view point on the Island. An additional attraction for visitors is the light illuminating the tower.
